SONY Watchman enters final day of duty after 23 years

sony_watchman_1.jpgWe now end our blogging day on a sad note, bidding adieu to an old, trusted partner - the SONY Watchman Model FD-10A my sister gave me as a long-ago gift.

It was manufactured in October of 1986, a month that will live in infamy in New York sports history.

Over the ensuing two decades, it accompanied me to numerous events, especially Giants games. (It always helps to know what TV analysts say, because it soon becomes what editors, sports radio hosts and readers think.)

Lately, though, I haven't had much use for the thing, what with the newer, bigger TV (with cable and DVR) in the basement.

Now, effective Friday, it's over for good. The transition to digital signals will render the Watchman useless.

Farewell, old friend.

(I got the picture here.)

I could've used a Watchman for the Woods-Mediate playoff last June.

I watched the 1988 NIT Finals on my Watchmen. Good times!

Tailgating will never be the same.

It'll still work. Just hook up one of those converter box thingies.

Make sure you blog about people's reactions as you haul that contraption around with you.

Had the same model, same thoughts. Useless. But a great TV with a lot of memories.

Time to bid that "newer, bigger TV (with cable and DVR) in the basement" adieu and step up to HDTV.

i had the same one!

hey, neil, they got color now, too!

Sad as it may be to give away 1980's technology, it's important for you to remember that the digital revolution has allowed you the opportunity to write (largely) incoherent sentence fragments punctuated by pictures of scantily-clad women for a living.

I await the "NEIL BEST CENTER FOR MISOGYNY AND MALE PATTERN BALDNESS STUDIES" at Cornell.

My guess, though, is just more "Combover Egosian and I shared a sandwich..."

I have the same one. I dug it out at the beginning of the year and have been turning it on lately for fun. I will turn it on tonight for one last time to see nothing. That went with me to many events. Sorry "Scott E" a converter box won't be able to save it, it doesn't have the inputs.

Lucy, you might find what Best writes is more coherent if you lay off the drugs. But not a bad post if looked at from the frat boy insult angle.

I actually liked Lucy's comment, and was ready to nominate it for the Friday Comment Contest. But (a) a winner was already chosen - from email, no less - and (b) Neil doesn't accept nominations.

I too will mourn the passing of the Watchman. I won mine, (FD20A mfg Oct 1984!) at Computer Expo in NYC and have traveled with it
for the past 24 years. It will now join the rest of the outdated but still
"working" stuff in the attic.

Could you help me. If the only prayer you ever say in your whole life is "thank you," that would suffice. Help me! Could you help me find sites on the: Fruit picking jobs australia. I found only this - real estate in west haven ct. Commercial real estate loans are souring at an accelerating pace, generally won loan over of a commercial property value. Whether its a fixed or variable vehicle finance loan, we have the right. With respect , Roselani from Cameroon.

Time to clean house and I have come across my old SONY Watchman Model FD-10A
which still works after I put in a replacement set of batteries. How much should I ask if I were to sell this hand held television set?
