Ted Williams, Don Ohlmeyer, Jimmy V. and Mad Dog

getty.jpgI am getting trained in some sort of new, improved blogging platform Wednesday, so there will be little or no posting that day.

So let's get some time-sensitive stuff out of the way now:

Item 1: HBO's latest sports documentary, "Ted Williams," debuts at 9:30 Wednesday and is well worth the 75-minute investment.

The show plays it down the middle in covering Williams, including his prickly personality and stormy personal life.

One highlight: a rare sitdown with daughter Claudia, arranged and conducted by Mary Carillo.

Item 2: I had heard ESPN was looking for someone with a TV background as its third ombudsman after two newspaper people.

Then Deadspin's A.J. Daulerio told me a month ago the leading candidate was Don Ohlmeyer. Two days later, Mr. Daulerio wrote it.

Don Ohlmeyer?! Friend of O.J.? Hirer of Dennis Miller? Sure enough, ESPN made it official Tuesday.

I have no idea whether this will work, but it should be quite fascinating to follow.

Item 3: Bidding ends at midnight Wednesday for several interesting items in 1050 ESPN's auction for the V Foundation for Cancer Research.

I'm thinking about upping the current $700 offer to sit on on the Michael Kay Show. You get to invite a guest to come along if you're the high bidder. Can I bring Max Kellerman?

Item 4: Yes, I am aware of Chris Russo ripping his staff and firing his program director last week. Yes, I assume it all was a publicity stunt. Yes, I appreciate your many emails alerting me to this development. Yes, I will look into it when I get around to it.

Well well. You're back just in time for two things:
1) The NHL 2009-10 schedule will be announced Wednesday 7/15. Always good news for those associated with the Flavor Enhancer Networks. Enough with the non-HD movies on networks so HD-valuable they're not sold to a competing television delivery service. I want my NHL!
2) With Tim Hortons invading all sorts of spaces under the round building at West 33rd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues in Manhattan including the LIRR area, will the aforementioned MonoSodiumGlutemate Networks strike an advertising deal with them? Will Trautwig shill for Timbits? Will Clyde go for double cream double sugar coffee?

Neil, thank god you're back.

How about a live chat to get everybody back on the same page.

Steve Torre was on Howard Stern on Monday and said that some of the stuff was tongue in cheek, but that his firing was not a stunt. I don't know what to believe.

So much stuff happening while youre gone! Balls to Erin Andrew's chin, Doggie's fake rant, Artie Lange's DUI. Welcome back!

"...it took two days for Russo’s epic rant to get widespread attention; if not for the devotees over at thechrisrusso.com, who knows how long it would have taken"

Is it official that Mike Francesa has won?

@Brian-

I just heard the rant yesterday-and its FAKE, FAKE, FAKE. Music playing in the background? Really? And Doggie sounding like a petulant teenager? I heard Dog's rants before, and this time he sounded like he was reading from a script. Dog wanted to show passion, but I did not hear any of it.

Here's audio of the rant on YouTube, Mr. Best

"when you get around to it"? You would think Newsday which is owned by Cablevision and the incredibly shrinking newspaper would have its media columnist on the story right away. But that's ok Neil. You rest.

Neil,

Hope Strunk + White are amongst your teachers.
