Favre From The Truth

favre-vikings.jpgThe Brett Favre and Minnesota Vikings courtship has now officially lasted longer than that of Eddies' Father.

(Wow, what a dated reference!  Way older than me, even.  Let's take a mulligan on that.)

The Brett Favre and Minnesota Vikings courtship has now officially lasted longer than that of The Bachelorette.

(Now we're back in the 21st century with our metaphors.)

Much has been speculated throughout the last few weeks about Favre's football future and also the relationship in between him and his former NFC North rivals.

Among the items surmised on those topics...
- If healthy, Favre would like to play again
- He has discussed that desire with the Minnesota Vikings
- He knows the Vikings offensive system very well
- He's had a recent surgery on his throwing shoulder

Monday night (6/15) on HBO's "Joe Buck Live", Brett Favre finally spoke publicly on those rumors.

Here's what we learned...
- If healthy, Favre would like to play again
- He has discussed that desire with the Minnesota Vikings
- He knows the Vikings offensive system very well
- He's had a recent surgery on his throwing shoulder

Glad I watched.

(Side note: Dressed in jeans and a t-shirt for the interview, is it possible that Brett really wants to wear Wranglers and play in a backyard instead of in a Vikings uniform at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome?)

Whatever the back story, Minnesota cannot afford to wait much longer.  Preparation for the 2009 season have already started, they begin training camp on July 31st and open their preseason August 14th against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The fascination over Favre's return is one that I, as a fan of the NFL, have been following too.  But I'm unable to fall in line with the myth that the addition to Brett Favre to an NFL roster ensures postseason success or a likely Super Bowl berth.

Some statistics to mull over...
Eli Manning postseason wins IN 2007 = 4
Brett Favre postseason wins SINCE 1999 = 3

A short list of NFL QB's that have won more playoff games than Brett Favre over the last 10 years...
Tom Brady (14)
Donovan McNabb (9)
Kurt Warner (8)
Ben Roethlisberger (8)
Peyton Manning (7)
Steve McNair (5)
Matt Hasselbeck (4)

Too quality a list of QB's to make my point?  Okay, then here's some more who have won more playoff games then Favre since 1999...
Trent Dilfer (5)
Jake Delhomme (5)
Rich Gannon (4)
Brad Johnson (4)

Now I've been a longtime believer that the quarterback position gets too much credit for victories and too much blame for defeats, but it does beg the question...Does adding Brett Favre to an NFL roster guarantee success in January (or February)?

Favre, make that, far from a sure thing.
