Tomorrow's Headlines Today

deewy-defeats-truman.jpg

None of us can accurately foresee the future.  And when I say that, I mean, NO ONE.  Otherwise, wouldn't psychics win the Power Ball Lottery each week?

The Chicago Tribune embarrassingly learned this lesson on November 3, 1948 when they erroneously reported that Thomas E. Dewey (Governor from New York) won the 1948 Presidential election over the incumbent, Harry S. Truman, in their newspaper's headline.

"Newspaper?  What is that??" (Collectively heard by everyone reading this that isn't older than 17 years of age) confused-students.jpgSettle down young ones, we're on the Internet and back to blogging now

Like the rest of the world, even us dinosaurs that recall newspapers and headlines, I'm hardly effective when trying to use the proverbial 'Crystal ball'.  But like everyone else, I still try.  (By the way, "You're Welcome", just in case my account manager from BetUS.com is also reading.)

Before the start of the 2009 NFL season, the Tennessee Titans were highly regarded as one of the top teams in the American Football Conference.  They have a ferocious defense, a "thunder & lightning" type running game and veteran quarterback capable of managing Titans' games.  Most of which were victorious. They finished the 2008 regular season as the top seed for the conference playoffs.

But the Titans were shocked at home in last year's postseason when the Baltimore Ravens, led by a rookie quarterback, came into Nashville and upset them, 13-10, in the divisional playoffs. The mighty Titans have started this season at 0-2 and haven't won a significant football game since last December (Week 16) when they pounded the Pittsburgh Steelers on the field and trounced their Terrible Towels on the sidelines.

Before the 2009 NFL season began, the New York Jets were considered a team in transition.  New head coach, Rex Ryan, brought some swagger to the nation's top-sized market but rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez was expected to learn the stiff lessons of the NFL's learning curve.

However, the New York Jets are off to a 2-0 start and even lead the "Team of the Decade" New England Patriots in the AFC East.  They are already saying that the cute QB kid from California is the man in the Big Apple these days.

Although I personally doubt that Derek Jeter has to wait behind Mark to get seated at any Manhattan restaurants derek-jeter-watch.jpg

Today the winless Titans travel to the Meadowlands to play the undefeated and favored (you read that right) Jets.

And here is a newspaper headline for tomorrow that I Just DON"T see today.

ny-times-sanchez-tomorrow.jpgSo today, I just love the Titans in this Week 3 matchup.  Not because they are playing better (they aren't), not because they are at home (they aren't) and not because the other experts see them as favorites (they don't).  But because the Titans are supposed to be better and desperately need a win, the Jets are supposed to be more average and wouldn't disappoint with a 2-1 record but, most of all, I just can't believe their respective records can look otherwise when I see the NFL standings following Week 3.

Then again, what in the hell do I know?  Last week at this time, I certainly didn't see this headline coming...
