"Can't Help It..." Why no Rush to Block Fergie?

rush-fergie.jpgThe NFL has approved Fergie (real name "Stacy Ann Ferguson") from the Black Eyed Peas as a limited owner of the Miami Dolphins.  If Fergie proceeds with the move, she will join other A-list celebrities: Venus Williams and Serena Williams, Jimmy Buffett, Marc Anthony and Emilio and Gloria Estefan, as limited partners of the Dolphins franchise.

Meanwhile, conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh waited for the NFL to approve his motion to make a bid on the St. Louis Rams.  Throughout the process Limbaugh was left sitting like an addicted pill-popper outside of a convenient store hoping to meet his drug dealer.

So, in other words, he's been here before.

Of the possibility of Rush becoming a partner on the Rams bid, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson were vocal of their displeasure (no surprise there) but so were both Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban (more surprising).  And so were numerous others both in and outside of the media.

On Wednesday (10/14/09), the group seeking to purchase the St. Louis Rams dropped Rush Limbaugh in effort to keep their bid intact.

Why was there such opposition to Rush Limbaugh as an NFL owner?

I know what the critics say was the reason.  They claim that Limbaugh, while working as an NFL analyst in 2003, made racist comments about Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.

Here's what Rush Limbaugh said back then, you be the judge...

"I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL,'' Limbaugh said."The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They're interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well ... McNabb got a lot of the credit for the performance of the team that he really didn't deserve.''

Is that a racist statement?  Perhaps, but not directed towards Donovan McNabb but, rather, pointed at the media.

Personally, I didn't find Rush's comments racist then or now.  Nor do I find racist the lyrics that Fergie sings in the Black Eyed Peas hit, "My Humps"...

I drive these brothers crazy, I do it on the daily...
...I mix your milk wit my cocoa puff, Milky, milky cocoa, Mix your milk with my cocoa puff, milky, milky riiiiiiight.

Now before you think I'm a fan of Rush Limbaugh or his rhetoric, listen to the 'Bud Lite' parody I was doing about him well before he made his bid to become a limited owner in the National Football League HEAR.
