Mergers we'd like to see
![]()
I don't know about you, but I can't get too excited about the proposed merger of Delta and Northwest.
I mean, they're both American airlines.
Last week I had lunch with a well-traveled acquaintance and we talked about that letdown you feel whenever you come back into the U.S. on a foreign carrier and then have to board a domestic for the connecting flight home. It's not just goodbye exotic flavors, it's goodbye food. Goodbye good manners. Goodbye smiles.
Normally, I'm not crazy about foreigners buying American companies, but I'd happily make an exception for airlines.
Singapore Airlines taking over American. Thai Airways taking over United. Qantas taking over Delta. Emirates taking over Continental. Cathay Pacific taking over US Airways
Oh, baby, let the mergers begin!

Yeah...don't European airlines give free booze on their flights? I know that might sound risque, but the pros outweigh the cons.
Pros:
- Sedation: speaking as someone who can only stand flying if I am sleeping (or calm enough to be capable of it), I would even pay like ten or fifteen bucks more for a ticket if a drink or two were included. Also, the last time I flew the woman next to me was so terrified she kept gripping my forearm. She could have used a drink. Also, that way I wouldn't have to go out of my way to have "cash" on hand...and who really uses cash now that there are debit cards, glorious debit cards? I can't help but smirk when I still people still writing checks.
- Aids in stimulating interpersonal relationships. Post-planage connections between lonely travelers
- Decrease of logic = more trifles bought at Hudson News.
Cons:
- Aids in stimulating interpersonal relationships and Post-planage connections.
- Vomit- splattered aisles, even more disgusting bathroom facilities, all resembling a Jackson Pollack painting gone terribly amiss
Okay, maybe it's not such a good idea. But it works in Europe, right?
