Places to go, things to do
It wouldn't be Friday without ... the best of the week's press releases.
There are a lot of bike trips through countrysides, but not a lot through cities. Fat Tire Bike Tours takes cyclists around London and Paris (where you ride during the day and at night).
While in London, you could stop by the Imperial War Museum and check out For Your Eyes Only: Ian Fleming and James Bond. The exhibit is on through next March, as this year marks the centenary of Ian Fleming's birth.
If a bike is a little too fast for you, the Wayfarers are offering a number of walks through delightful regions of France and Italy (like Provence and Cinque Terre).
Divers love Bonaire and vice versa, as evidenced by something the Dutch Island calls "Bonaire Dive Into Summer 2008." Among the events are International Year of the Reef Week, June 21-28 and Scuba Diving Magazine Week, July 19-26.
And if you're in Fort Lauderdale next Friday (April 18) you can pretend you're in India, and see one of that country's most popular singers, the ageless Asha Bhosle, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. The event is sponsored by the Broward Center and the wonderful Rhythm Foundation.

One of my best days in Paris was a bike tour spent with 'Paris a Velo, C'est Sympa' (Paris by Bike is Nice). We took the 'Insolite 13th' or unusual 13th neighborhood tour. An American woman in our group brought her son along - she told me she had participated in the 1968 student protests - but now she said she was being a 'responsible parent.'
But, the Best Bike Trip Ever was the one you suggested I take in the Everglades. How often can you ride your bike past alligators? If that's not adventure travel, I don't know what is. Where else can you find such apt 'pickpockets'- those starlings that unzip bikers' gear to steal trailmix?

Hahaha, the last time I think I rode a (non-stationary) bike was 6 years ago, right after I met my husband. I was still living at home in Hollywood (represent!), and he had just left with his cobalt-blue Cavalier. I had hopped on the 10 speed I got for (appropriately?) my 10th birthday to get some sugar-food at 7-11...I was halfway down the block when I saw him coming back. Something happened to his car...he ended up spending the night and getting it towed the following morning, but not before I made him ride my stepmother's banana-seat bike down to 7-11 with me. I guess it's only funny to me, because that was the most athletic activity I had ever seen him partake in. He was so miserable, poor soul.
Aside: I would've driven my car to 7-11, but alas, it was broken as well. Poor Bianca, my first car, white with a tan roof, 88 Cadillac Eldorado. Five years younger than me. So many times someone in the lane next to me would tell me to sit farther back from the steering wheel in case of an accident, but I couldn't reach the pedal otherwise.
