Breakfast at FLL
![]()
Ever since airlines stopped serving food, airports have done an excellent job providing it themselves. Sunday, changing planes in Charlotte, I had a delicious pulled pork sandwich which came with a vinegary sauce that told me I was in Carolina. (Though I knew it anyway, as I was eating at Carolina Brew Company,)
But the airports seem to have forgotten one meal: breakfast. At least my local airport, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, has. Once again I arrived for an early morning flight out of Terminal 3, passed through security, and then wandered disconsolately past the coolers of heavily sweetened bottled juices and the heat lamps shining on fully-wrapped egg sandwiches that could have been made three days before.
Yes, there's a restaurant before security, but Americans are business-before-pleasure people: we don't want to go through that hassle on a full stomach. And because of cheaper fares, and the lowered chance of massive delays, more and more of us are taking early morning flights. (And sometimes we're not morning people, a condition that renders us incapable of making breakfast at home.)
I'm not asking for omelet stations (though that would be nice). But what about at least a Jamba Juice for people who want something healthy, and fresh, before entering the starvation chamber of coach?

Hahaha, since I think I'm going to die every time I get on a plane, I'll go and get a burger before the flight. I always tell myself the burger (and fries...I like fries more than burgers, I can't help it they're so good) is o.k. since it will probably be my last meal. That's so morbid.
But seriously...every time I've gotten a salad an airport it tastes like grass.

Hi Tom --
Boy, I sure can relate to this post. I often take early outbound flights, and breakfast in FLL is the worst. There is a spot in the Delta terminal where you can at least get a croissant. But fruit, poached eggs, even a nice bowl of cereal? Forget it.
David and I now get around this by making turkey sandwiches (no mayo, so refrigeration is not an issue) on fresh bread at home and taking them in our carry-ons. Then we either eat after we go through security or wait until we get on the plane. It's an unusual breakfast, but hey -- it's really no different than toast and eggs (also protein), and probably more healthy.
I do have to say: Breakfast isnt a lot better at most other US airports I have been to. I was at Midway in Chicago very early Monday morning this week. I had ordered what supposedly were take-away hash browns only because they were the least objectionable item. They looked, and tasted, like yesterday's french fries that had been cut up into pieces. Not a good way to start the day.
